In November 2001, I won first prize for 2-dimensional work in The Sadat Art for Peace Competition, sponsored by Suzanne F. Cohen in memory of her late husband Nathan L. Cohen, LAW '69 This competition selects the best artwork depicting the theme of peace and reconciliation, and is held in conjunction with the annual Sadat Lecture for Peace.
My piece entitled, Media and Its Words was given to Nelson Mandela on the occasion of the Sadat Lecture for Peace. Listening to Nelson Mandela speak that evening was amazing. And to see him hold my artwork after his speech, was such an honor. It's an experience that I will never forget.
Several weeks ago, I was contacted by my (*awesome) college art professor, Dawn Gavin ... who informed me that my award-winning piece and essay was included in a commemorative book: The Sadat Lectures: Words and Images on Peace, 1997-2008 by Shibley Telhami. And just a few days ago, I received a copy of it!
The book is absolutely fantastic, and includes lectures by Jehan Sadat, Ezer Weizman, Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger, George Mitchell, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, Mary Robinson, James Baker III, Mohamed ElBaradei, with concluding thoughts by Aaron David Miller.
