Nerd is so Now

If thick-rimmed glasses, suspenders and oversized blazers sound completely normal, one is already channeling their inner nerd. Portlanders embrace personal style, and thankfully this happens to be one of them. Whether we are intellectual or not, we depend on the look that makes us appear that way. Although we have been working this trend for ages, nerd-wear has recently become a national trend. Of course, this won’t change anything in Portland, but maybe it will allow for more people to jump on board to what has always looked right.

When finding your inner nerd, look for inspiration. Although it won’t be easy to find, television shows like Mad Men and even characters on Glee exhibit this look at its best. In film, characters like Louis Lane and Clark Kent of Superman, and Mary Jane and Peter of Spiderman all exhibit how being identified nerd is just as stylish, if not more, than being labeled anything else.

Pocket protectors are unnecessary, but harnessing suspenders done stylishly will really celebrate nerd-done-right. Pair with a cotton blouse and boyfriend trousers. Classic black, neutral grey, colorless white, as well as primary red, yellow and blue, look best. Classic colors allow for versatility, while primary colors pop. Of course to really represent nerd, dramatic red brings it like no other. However, when it comes down to it, it’s all about personal style.

Oversized blazers have been popular in their own right, but when paired with glasses and suspenders, they pull the look together. Two-toned, pockets, buttons and v-neck features are those found on the best options. If one isn’t currently hanging in a closet, it won’t be hard to find one or two favorites out there. Popping up in all the boutiques and department stores, as well as the option to check out local vintage shops, there will be colors and styles for all to be had.
